Why these releases move markets
- FOMC rate decisions. The Fed sets the price of US dollars. A surprise in the rate or in the statement's tone reprices bonds, the dollar, equities and Bitcoin within minutes. Projection meetings add the dot plot, which often moves markets more than the decision itself.
- CPI inflation. The main input to Fed expectations. A hotter-than-expected CPI print pushes up yields and the dollar and usually hits growth assets such as the Nasdaq and crypto.
- Jobs report. Non-farm payrolls and the unemployment rate show how much room the Fed has. Weak jobs data in August 2024 helped trigger the yen carry-trade unwind.
- PCE inflation. The Fed's preferred inflation gauge, released a couple of weeks after CPI.
- GDP, PPI and JOLTS. Second-tier releases that confirm or challenge the story told by CPI and payrolls.
Trading US data from Australia
Most US releases land in the Sydney evening or overnight: CPI and payrolls around 10:30 pm to 12:30 am, and the FOMC decision between 4:00 am and 6:00 am. Two practical points from years of watching these prints on a desk:
- Spreads widen at the release. Even tight raw-spread accounts see spreads blow out for a few seconds around the print. The news-event spread simulator shows what that does to a stop.
- Crypto trades straight through. Bitcoin reacts 24/7, so a CPI surprise at 10:30 pm Sydney can move your position before you check it in the morning. Size leverage for the release, not for the quiet hours before it.
Methodology
- FOMC. Parsed from the Federal Reserve's FOMC calendar page. The decision time is 2:00 pm New York on the final day of each meeting. Notation votes and unscheduled calls are excluded.
- CPI, jobs, PPI, JOLTS. From the Bureau of Labor Statistics release calendar feed.
- GDP and PCE. From the Bureau of Economic Analysis release schedule.
- Time zones. New York times are converted to UTC and then to Sydney, allowing for US and Australian daylight saving separately.
- Update schedule. Re-read from all three sources twice a day. If a source is unreachable, its last known dates are kept, since schedules are published a year ahead.

Frequently asked questions
The next FOMC rate decision is Thursday 29 October at 5:00 am AEDT (October 28 at 2:00 PM New York time); the next US CPI release is Wednesday 14 October at 11:30 pm AEDT (October 14 at 8:30 AM New York time); the next US jobs report is Friday 2 October at 10:30 pm AEST (October 2 at 8:30 AM New York time).
The Federal Reserve releases its rate decision at 2:00 pm New York time on the second day of each meeting, with the press conference at 2:30 pm. In Sydney that is between 4:00 am and 6:00 am the next morning, depending on daylight saving in both countries (6:00 am for the December and January meetings). The FOMC table on this page shows each decision in Sydney time.
US CPI comes out at 8:30 am New York time. In Sydney that is 10:30 pm or 11:30 pm the same day for most of the year, and 12:30 am the next morning in the months when Sydney is on daylight saving and New York is not. The upcoming releases table shows the exact Sydney time for each date.
The Federal Open Market Committee is the Federal Reserve committee that sets the US policy interest rate (the federal funds target range). It meets eight times a year. Meetings marked with projections also publish the Summary of Economic Projections, including the dot plot of where officials expect rates to go.
The FOMC decision, CPI inflation and the monthly jobs report (non-farm payrolls) usually produce the biggest moves, because they change expectations for US interest rates and the dollar. PCE inflation and GDP matter too, but are more often anticipated by CPI and the jobs data. Moves are often sharpest in the first 15 to 60 minutes after release.
Three official sources: the Federal Reserve's FOMC calendar page, the Bureau of Labor Statistics release calendar (CPI, jobs, PPI, JOLTS), and the Bureau of Economic Analysis release schedule (GDP and PCE). An automated refresh re-reads all three twice a day and converts New York times to Sydney time, allowing for daylight saving in both cities.
Occasionally. US government shutdowns have delayed BLS and BEA releases, and the Fed can add unscheduled meetings in a crisis. Because the calendar is re-read from the official sources twice a day, a rescheduled date appears here within about 12 hours of the agency changing it.
