Live price

Live prices are fetched in your browser and are editable. Indicative spot rates; your exchange price will differ slightly.

How it works

The converter holds the live price of each coin in both AUD and USD. Type an amount of crypto and it multiplies by the price to show the dollar value; type a dollar value and it divides by the price to show how much crypto that buys. Switch the currency toggle to flip every figure between Australian and US dollars, or change the coin to convert a different asset.

It is built for quick value checks: what is my 0.5 BTC worth right now, or how much ETH does $1,000 buy. For the proceeds of an actual trade, read the figure off your exchange at the moment you trade, since the spread and fees move the real number slightly.

Popular Australian crypto exchanges

All three are AUSTRAC-registered Australian exchanges. Crypto is volatile; only invest what you can afford to lose.

Converting is a taxable event

Checking a value here is not taxable, but actually selling crypto or swapping one coin for another generally is a capital gains tax event in Australia. A profit is usually a capital gain to report, and holding for more than 12 months may qualify for the 50 percent CGT discount. To estimate the tax owing, use the crypto CGT calculator, and to work out the profit on a trade, the crypto profit calculator. See the crypto tax guide for detail.

Frequently asked questions

Use the converter above: select Bitcoin, enter the amount of BTC, and it shows the value in AUD at the live price. You can also type a dollar figure into the value field to see how much Bitcoin that buys. The price is fetched live in your browser, and you can switch between AUD and USD with the toggle. This gives an indicative market value; the exact price you get on an exchange will differ slightly with spreads and fees.

When the page loads, it fetches the current price of each supported coin directly in your browser from a public market-data source, in both AUD and USD. Nothing is sent to our servers and there is no signup. If the live price cannot be reached, you can type a price in manually and the converter still works. Live prices are indicative spot rates and can differ slightly from the exact rate on any given exchange.

It covers major coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Chainlink, Avalanche and Polkadot, each convertible to AUD or USD. For a quick value check these cover the large majority of what Australians hold. For coins not listed, you can still estimate by entering the current price manually.

It is accurate for an indicative market value, using the live spot price and your inputs. Small differences from what you actually receive on an exchange come from the bid-ask spread, trading fees, and the exact moment and venue of your trade. For a quick conversion or value check it is precise enough; for the exact proceeds of a real trade, read the figure off your exchange at the time of the transaction.

Simply checking a value with this converter is not a taxable event. But actually selling crypto for dollars, or swapping one coin for another, generally is a capital gains tax event under ATO rules, and a profit is usually a capital gain to report. Holding for more than 12 months may qualify for the 50 percent CGT discount. To estimate the tax, use the crypto CGT calculator, and see the crypto tax guide for the full rules.
